Aspen’s Story

Founded in 1880, Aspen has established itself as a resort town with a diverse cultural scene backed by a rich history. From the flush days of silver mining to the lean “Quiet Years”;  from the romance of ranching to the rise of skiing; Aspen has always been a colorful place.

There are the people – Jerome B. Wheeler, Hannibal Brown, Freddie Fisher, André Roch, Friedl Pfeifer and Stein Eriksen; and then Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke whose “Aspen Idea” became the foundation for the future.  And the stars who put Aspen/Snowmass on the celebrity map — Goldie, Kurt, Barbie, Jack. Most important, there are the industrious residents who continue to make the community a unique and fresh place to visit.

There are the places. From Independence Pass to the Maroon Bells, Aspen is circled by Mother Nature’s finest work!  Many areas are easily accessible — by foot, by ski or sled.

There are the events. Aspen shines not only because of the surrounding Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness, but also because of a lively cultural and social scene. Home to the Aspen Ideas Festival. Aspen Music Festival, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet,  Aspen Art Museum, Aspen offers the opportunity to experience world-class music, theater, dance, top-notch restaurants, and happening nightlife in a one-of-a kind town.
